Do you remember, the scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz? He said he did not have a brain, yet as the story unfolded, the watcher realized he was a hardworking and inventive character, who always found a way to solve problems. He was creative and resourceful, always coming up with new solutions to help himself and his friends. In fact, he was so clever that the Wizard of Oz ultimately granted him the “degree” he was seeking, recognizing he had a brain all along.
When I decided to pursue my International Coaching Federation Certification, a friend said to me, “I feel like you are the scarecrow, Teresa. You have been coaching and mentoring people for years and they have gone on to do great things. Why do you feel like you need a certification?”
Well, I believe, just like what the scarecrow experienced when he received his “degree,” obtaining a certification can bring unexpected benefits, even if we already have the knowledge.
A long and challenging journey
The pursuit of certifications requires a lot of time, effort, and dedication. We must study, take exams, and demonstrate our knowledge and skills. I just finished the first step in this journey by achieving “Certified Executive Coach” through the Center for Executive Coaching. Many more steps are ahead of me as I journey towards my ICF Certification.
Commitment to the craft
A certification demonstrates our commitment to our profession and showcases our expertise to potential employers and clients. It is a sign that we are dedicated to our field and that we are constantly striving to improve and grow.
Knowledge of industry trends and developments
ICF has dedicated itself to ensuring its coaches are the best they can be and recently revised their guidelines to reinforce that commitment. Even coaches must continue our education and keep up with the changing landscape of our field, ensuring we are always equipped with the latest knowledge and skills. This benefits us and benefits our clients and employers, as we are able to provide them with the best possible service.
Increased earning potential
“I have never had someone ask to see my ICF credentials,” says every coach I have spoken to. Well, I haven’t had anyone ask me if I have an MBA, yet I still know it matters and it was worth obtaining. Certifications open up more doors and clients are often willing to pay a premium for those who hold a certification in their field, as it demonstrates their expertise and commitment.
Sometimes it is just about the journey
Much like the journey to find the Wizard of Oz, the pursuit of certifications can also be an opportunity to grow and learn. The process is long and hard, yet so rewarding in the end… and worth taking a moment to celebrate the milestones.
